Statement of Chairman Bennie G. Thompson on the WHO Decision to Raise its H1N1 Alert Level to Pandemic Status

Thursday, June 11, 2009

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security released the following statement on the World Health Organization (WHO) decision to raise its H1N1 influenza pandemic alert to Phase 6:

“This declaration sends the right message to the world. We must continue to take the spread of this virus and all influenza strains seriously. My Committee has been tracking these threats for years. In our January 2009 report on Pandemic Influenza, I noted the Bush Administration’s piecemeal approach to pandemic preparation. Their approach left the nation vulnerable. I commend the Department, other federal agencies, and state and local partners for doing a great job under these difficult circumstances. But the job is not done.”

“I remain committed to solving this problem and the Committee on Homeland Security will continue its examination of our national readiness for pandemic influenza.”
